Collector - Sandustry Wiki
Learn how Collector tiles make Gold available for Research in Sandustry, how the non-solid building works, and why loose Gold may not count.
Overview
The Collector is a non-solid building tile that makes Gold inside it count toward the player’s available currency. It connects physical Gold production to Research: Gold must be within Collector tiles before it appears in the HUD and can be spent.
This page reflects the official Wiki and current Early Access gameplay evidence checked on August 17, 2026. It does not assign the Collector an unverified pickup range, storage capacity, or fixed Research order.

How to Obtain
Current Early Access gameplay shows Collector tiles during the opening tutorial, when players move their first Gold into the collection area before progressing through Research. Follow the Objectives in the current build; the checked sources do not establish a permanent build cost, unlock cost, or universal acquisition order.
How It Works
| Stage | Verified Behavior |
|---|---|
| Input | Gold must enter and remain within Collector tiles. |
| Counting | Gold inside the tiles appears in the HUD as available currency. |
| Use | That available Gold can be spent to unlock Research technologies. |
| Physical behavior | Collector tiles are not solid, so pixels fall directly through them rather than resting on the building itself. |
The Collector counts Gold; it does not refine Gold or transform it into another material. The official documentation does not establish automatic suction, an attraction radius, or a fixed pickup distance.
Used For
- Available Gold: Collector tiles make Gold inside them count toward the player’s bank.
- Research: Gold counted by the Collector can be spent on Research technologies.
- Production feedback: The HUD reflects whether produced Gold has reached a valid Collector area.
Collector placement does not define which Research must be unlocked next, and this page does not publish technology costs or a fixed progression order.
Related Buildings
- Shaker — produces Gold below the machine; that Gold must then reach Collector tiles to become available for Research.
No additional Building relationship is required to explain the Collector’s verified function.
Related Resources
- Gold — the material counted while it is inside Collector tiles.
- Residue — the Shaker’s other output; it does not count as currency and needs a separate route away from the Gold path.
Tips and Notes
- If the HUD does not show newly produced Gold, check whether the Gold pixels are physically inside Collector tiles.
- Keep in mind that the tile is non-solid. Gold can fall through it, so surrounding terrain or routing must keep the material within the Collector area if it needs to remain counted.
- Do not assume the Collector pulls Gold from nearby space. The checked official sources do not document a pickup radius.
- A larger or differently positioned collection area is a layout choice, not a verified universal requirement.
- Collector behavior does not prove a fixed Research sequence or technology cost.
FAQ
What does a Collector do in Sandustry?
It counts Gold inside its tiles as available currency. That Gold appears in the HUD and can be spent on Research.
Why can I see Gold but cannot spend it?
The Gold may be outside Collector tiles. Route or move the pixels into the Collector area and check whether the HUD updates while the Gold is inside.
Does a Collector process Gold?
No. It counts Gold for the available bank but does not transform it into another material.
Does a Collector pull in nearby Gold?
No pickup radius or attraction distance is established by the checked official sources. Build the material route so Gold physically enters the Collector tiles.
Does Collector placement determine Research order?
No. Collector tiles make Gold spendable, while Research progression is a separate system. This page does not publish a fixed unlock sequence or cost list.
